Transcript of Modern Dance

Modern Dance What is modern dance? Well, modern dance was born in the early 20th century. Modern dance is a dance style that centers on a dancer's own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in traditional ballet dancing. Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. Modern dancers often use their body weight to enhance movement. Martha Graham Martha Graham is considered one of the foremost pioneers of American modern dance. She focused heavily on basic human movement, concentrating on the movements of contraction and release. Instead of striving for long, fluid movements, Graham's movements were sharp and jagged. Graham's vision for modern dance earned her several awards and honors. She was nominated for an emmy award twice. Once in 1977 and again in 1979. http://www.centerforexpressivearts.com/uploads/Event%20Images/modern%20dance.jpg http://the-falcon1.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/.pond/snow_cover-ithaca-ballet-and-modern-dance-cities.jpg.w300h404.jpg\ http://theatre-dance.cahss.ualr.edu/waynesweb/Modance/Graham.jpg http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01373/Martha_Graham_1373799f.jpg
