The Great Explorer
Marco Polo is Venetian merchant and world explorer.He traveled from Europe to Asia from 1271 to 1295. He wrote IL Milione known in English as The Travels Of Marco Polo.
Who Is Marco Polo?
Marco Polo was born in 1254 in Venice, Italy.
He was a member of a very wealthy Venetian merchant family. Most of his childhood was spent with no parents and was raised by an extended family. Marco's mother died when he was young and his dad and uncle, successful merchants Niccolo and Mefeo Polo were in Asia most of marco's young life.
His Early Life
In 1271 Marco's uncle and father sent out to Asia again, but this time brought young Marco along. Unable to recruit 100 preists that Kublai Khan, the leader of Mongol, requested they left with only 2, that soon turned back and went home. The Polos' journey was on on land, and were forced to take short cuts through harsh and challenging territory. After about 4 years, they reached the Khan.
