"We share the desire for authenticity and see value in the acknowledgment that human beings are imperfect and should not be expected to behave otherwise. However, we have a number of problems with the use of these rules to ground a social justice dialogue. First, they fail to account for another truth we hold about human beings: although we have some choice in how we respond to and express our emotions, we do not have control over which ones we experience at any given time and to what degree.
