Sportsmanship Quotes
Before you leave
I want to see a quote from you.

Finish this sentence....

If sportsmanship is ever going to get better tomorrow, we will have to______________

Leave on desk as you leave
Definition of Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship vs
Gamesmanship
Spirit of the rule
Louisville HS Louisville Ne
“Sportsmanship to me is going out and
playing as hard as you can within the rules”
“There is no such thing as sportsmanship”
“I am not a role model”
“The athlete is not the one who decides whether or not they are a role model”
“I would rather win than have good sportsmanship”
“Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months, and years they spend preparing for it”
“When you’re playing it as a business…your livelihood depends on winning and so sometimes sportsmanship is lost, as in the process of any billion dollar industry”
“One man practicing good sportsmanship is far better than 50 others preaching it”
Sportsmanship in the classroom

1. Coaches are Leaders
2. Discuss like a Leader
3. Respect others views (no put downs)
4. Respect others time (don't hog the floor)
5. Respect the process (read, watch, have an informed take)
6. Respect the teachers lead
7. Agree to disagree......just do it agreeably

Does the end justify the means?

2 most important factors of whether a team will win a certain game
Definition of Winning
Welcome to our Hybrid Class
Does it matter whether you win or lose? Yes or No?
Team Culture
Today's Plan

Sportsmanship wrap up
What about winning!?
Let's take a peek behind the scoreboard
Does it matter whether you emphasize sportsmanship?
Can you be highly competitive and
still exhibit sportsmanship?
People notice when you do things right
Does every coach
make the right choice?
1. Your Engagement
2. My 2 Cents Worth
Case Study # 1
You are the coach of a basketball
team that is winning by a score of
88-20. You can put in your subs to finish
the last 5 min....or you can leave in y0ur
starters with a full court press to be the
first team in school history to score
100 points in a game.

What would you do?
Case Study # 2
Your the coach for a high school soccer team,
and your starting goal scoring forward
gets injured right before the regional
game. The doctor says there is a 30% chance
if he plays, the injury could get much worse.
Even at 70%, he is much better than most.
So....would you play him?
Case study # 3

Your team has started trash talking toward the other team during games...
You let it go because you see it start to have some success

Do you let it go?
Have your books and Lecture Videos?
If you think the scoreboard is the only definition of winning....
The end justifies the means....
As long as you win...that's all that counts

Wednesday Morning Quarterback
Introducing: The Devils Advocate Card
No
Devils Advocate Card
Is there such a thing as
sportsmanship in the classroom?
1. The golden rule: treat others as you would want to be treated
2. SOTG takes real effort

3. Taunting has no place in the game
4. SOTG is compatible with championship play
5. Don't "Give as you got"
6. Take a Deep Breath
7. Be generous with praise
8. Impressions Linger
9. Have Fun
10. When you do the right thing....People notice
"It's a great moment when someone has the character to step up and do the right thing....at the right time."
