Symbolism in Animal Farm
Transcript of Symbolism in Animal Farm
The symbols in animal farm are the Animal Farm, the barn , the windmill, the state ritual, and the different songs and poems. Claim
The author, George Orwell uses different symbols in Animal Farm to represent the changes that happen throughout the entire book and to show that animals are not so differnt than humans, and the communist societies. Big Questions
Does animal farm demostrate that harsh society is inevitable?
How do theses symbols cause chaos on the farm? "Then Snowball (for it was Snowball who has the best writing) took a brush between the two knuckles of his trotter, painted out MANOR FARM from the top bar of the gate and in its place painted ANIMAL FARM"(32). This shows the communist feelings of the animals like the Soviet Union and Russia. "It was about this time that the pigs suddenly moved into the farmhouse and took up residence there"(45). The higher authority takes residence in the farm house, so the pigs slowly start to take over animal farm, they are the ones that disobey the 7 commandments that are written on the barn. They are also the ones that change the rules so that they become more like the humans. "Within a few weeks Snowball's plans for the windmill were fully worked out. The mechanical details came mostly from three books which had belonged to Mr.Jones-one thousand useful things to do about the house. Every man his own bricklayer, and electricity for beginners"(54). This shows the pigs manipulate the other animals, to get them to have smaller rations, and do all the back-breaking labor. "It was decided to set the gun at the foot of the flagstaff, like a piece of artillery, and to fire it twice a year-once on October the twelth, the anniversary of the Battle of the Cowshed, and once on midsummer day, the anniversary of the Rebellion"(44). State rituals become more common on the farm to enforce the animals loyalty to the farm, also it is a way to show that some animals are better than others. " I am old and my voice is hoarse, but when I have taught you the tune, you can sing it better for yourselves. It is called the Beasts of England"(12). The music and songs in animal farm show the propaganda that the pigs spread around and make the other animals focus on the tasks that Napoleon says will help them achive their freedom. Bibliography
