Transcript of The History of the Computer Ana Carolina
100 years ago people no one had even heard of a computer. People used abacus to do math problems. Instead of using a computer to write E-mails people used typewriters. Sometimes people would just write a letter by hand and take it to the Post Office.
This is Charles Babbage
"The Father of Computers".
Inventors tried to work on counting machines. Charles Babbage was born on England and he invented the the first counting machine. In 1896 Herman Hollerith Invented the first calculator. He made a company to sell calculators, but soon people were looking for something better. Charles Babbage is sometimes called "The Father of Computers". Herman Hollerith was a teacher. In 1884 he invented the first counting machine.

This was the Altair 8800
No one had a personal computer until 1975. That year they started to sell personal computers to tke home. The first personal computers were called Altair 8800. That computer didn't have a screen either a keyboard. The Altair 8800 only did 1 job it either played games or did math or something else. Soon people wanted computers that did more things.
This was the colussus computer (The first computer!)
In 1941 Great Britain and United States were fighting against Germany. The though could help the win the war. The first computer was made in 1943 in the United States. This computer could help with math problems. In the same year England built the Colususs Computer. This computer was the first electronic computer. The colususs computer could also read secret codes. The problem was that the first computers didn't have computer screens.

This aws the Eniac computer
The Eniac computer was built 3 years later in the United States. John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert built that computer. It was better than the colussus computer because it answered a math problem in 30 seconds. Without a computer it would take you 12 hours. Mauchly and Eckert decided to keep on making better computers. In 1951 they built the univac computer in the United States, it could more jobs than the other computers for example , to count how many people lived in the United States. each computer kept on being smaller each time.
A Computer as Big as a House
Making Computers Better
This kind of computers were used for work.
The first computers they made had only a few memory to store things. The first computers could only remember 1,000 word. Inventors tried to make computers have more memory. Now computers can store more than a million words and numbers. Inventors made computers smaller in the 1960's. People started to work with computers but no one had computers at home. Almost all the computers were used to count big numbers.
This was bill Gates the one who did computer programs.
Bill Gates invented computer programs in 1975 which were a way to tell PC's what to do. If the computer had lots of programs your computer could do many jobs. Herman Hollerith began selling computers that already came with programs on them. Programs helped computers keep lists, type a letter and to anser hard math problems. In 1975 Bill Gates Helped a company called Microsoft to make and sell computer programs. The IBM computers already had screen and keyboard It even had a printer!
