WALT WHITMAN AMERICAN POET ESSAYIST JOURNALIST DESCRIBED AS A SEXUAL POET BECAUSE OF HIS POEMS CALLED "LEAVES OF THE GRASS". BORN IN WEST HILLS, LONG ISLAND ON MAY 31,1819 AND WAS THE SECOND OF HIS OTHER EIGHT BROTHERS AND SISTERS. AT THE AGE OF FOUR...WALT AND HIS FAMILY MOVED TO BROOKLYN AND HAD A PRETTY BAD CHILDHOOD BECAUSE HIS FAMILY WAS POOR. WHITMAN WORKED FOR A FEW OFFICES AND NEWSPAPERS AS A PAPERBOY FOR A LITTLE MORE MONEY FOR HIS FAMILY...LATER ONE SUMMER, HIM AND HIS FAMILY MOVED BACK TO LONG ISLAND!! WALT TRIED TO BE A TEACHER AND TAUGHT AT SEVERAL SCHOOLS.HE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE JOB SO HE MOVED TO NEW YORK AND STARTED HIS OWN NEWSPAPER CALLED THE " LONG ISLANDER". walt started to write poems and published his first book of poems called "leaves of grass", and paid for the book publishing all by himself. many people criticized the book and some poeple praised it. like one man who wrote walt a five page letter explaining how much he liked the book. DURING THE CIVIL WAR, WALT WROTE MANY PATRIOTIC POEMS ABOUT WHAT THE WAR WAS LIKE WITH HELP FROM THE LETTERS THAT HIS BROTHER GEORGE, WHO JOINED THE UNION ARMY SENT HIM. WALT WHITMAN...WHO IS THE GUY?? LEAVES OF GRASS "AMERICAN EPIC" "FREE VERSE" "STIRRED UP SIGNIFICENT INTEREST" JOHN PETER CALLED THE BOOK "TRASHY, PROFANE, AND OBSCENE.HE ALSO CALLED THE AUTHOR "A PRETENTIOUS ASS". WALT HAD MONEY ISSUES. 795 COPIES WERE PRINTED "THE PROOF OF A POET IS THAT HIS COUNTRY ABSORBS HIM AS AFFECTIONATE AS HE HAS ABSORBED IT." -walt whitman
