Return: The Refusal of the Return
After being discharged from the army, Forrest is now allowed to return to his life in his small town. However, he chooses to continue his journey and buys a shrimp boat in order to fulfill Bubba's goal.

After Jenny leaves Forrest, he spontaneously decides to embark on a long run to no specific place. He continues to run for over three years in order to figure out his goal in life and make a plan for his future.
Return: The Rescue from Without
Throughout his long run for 3 years, 2 months, 14 days, and 16 hours, Forrest is able to think about Bubba, his mother, Lieutenant Dan, and especially Jenny. He realizes through the years of running that he cannot let Jenny go and decides to return home in order to win back his lover.

Return: The Master of Two Worlds
Return: The Return with the Elixir
After many years of being alone, Forrest finally achieves his dream and marries Jenny. He also meets his smart son and the family lives peacefully.
Throughout the story, Forrest sees Jenny as his ultimate prize in life. When Jenny passes away, the characteristics and hope Forrest was given by Jenny is then passed over to his son, Forrest Jr. He reflects the spirit of Jenny and is viewed as Forrest's life destination.
• Forrest’s platoon is attacked by the enemy in Vietnam; Forrest loses his friend, Bubba.
• Forrest then loses his mother to cancer.
• From an incurable AIDS diagnosis, Jenny dies shortly after their marriage.
