¿What is an ellipse?
An ellipse is a curve on a plane that surrounds two focal points.
The sum of the distances between two points (called foci) to every point on the line is named “constant”.
These two distances determine the size of the ellipse.

How does lithostripsy works?
Lithotripsy uses sound waves to break stones apart, these sound waves are also called high-energy shock waves.

ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy) is the most common form or Lithotrispy refers to the source of the shock waves applied from outside the body using a special machine.

The point inside the ellipse that is the intersection of the major and minor axes.

The longest and shortest diameters of an ellipse.
Are the distance from the center to the furthest and closest point on the ellipse.

In an ellipse, if you make the major and minor axis the same length, the result is a circle, with both foci at the center.

It is a noninvasive procedure, because it does not require a surgical procedure. Noninvasive procedures are generally safer and easier to recover from than invasive procedures

Is it safe?
After lithotropsy...
...Stone debris is removed from the kidney or the tubes leading from the kidney to the bladder through urination.
How long it is?
The lithotripsy procedure takes about 45 minutes to one hour to perform.
Does it hurts?
The patient will be put to sleep with general anesthesia. Because of this, patients usually do not experience pain.

***Sometimes patients will be allowed to remain awake during the procedure and may even be allowed to follow the progress of the procedure on an ultrasound or X-ray monitor.
Which is the relation between ellipses and lithotripsy?
One important benefit of the ellipse is its reflective property.
This is also true not only for light rays, but also for other forms of energy, including shockwaves.
How does it works?
It is reflective, so a light ray emitted from one foci will reflect off the ellipse and pass through the second focus.

Shockwaves generated at one foci will reflect off the ellipse and pass through the second focus.

...this characteristic, unique to the ellipse, has inspired a useful medical application.
A lithotripter uses shockwaves to shatter a painful kidney stone (or gallstone) into tiny pieces that can be easily passed by the body. This process is known as lithotripsy.
