The land had fertile soil. When the glaciers from the ice age melted it left the fertile soil behind. It is very good for growing crops.
There were many hills and valleys in the Middle Colonies.
The climate is very good for crop growing too. It has rain and sun.
There are a lot of rivers in the Middle Colonies. That is good for transportation.

New York
New Jersey
The boundaries to the north are the New England Colonies.
The boundaries to the south are the Southern Colonies.
The boundary the east is the Atlantic Ocean.
The boundaries to the west is French territory.
The other reason is for religious reasons.

In 1626 Peter Minuit bought Modern day New York City (New Amsterdam
In 1664 New Netherlands was taken over by the English because of Peter Stuyvesant and the name was changed to New York after James the Duke of York.
William Penn got Pennsylvania from the king and the Duke of York gave him even more land which will become Delaware.
The Duke of York gave his two friends land and they called them East Jersey and West Jersey. They later combined and changed the name to New Jersey.
Peter Minuit bought Manhattan (New York City) from the Manhattan Indians.
Peter Stuyvesant was the bad leader that no one liked. He's the reason that we have New York today.
William Penn is the one that founded Pennsylvania because of debt from the king.
James the Duke of York is the one who owned all the land of New York but gave a little of it to his friends and William Penn.
Ben Franklin was one of America's first inventors and he invented many things that are still important today.
Major People
One reason is that it was a perfect place to grow crops and to make money from it.
The first job they do is farming. Lots of people farm because there is perfect climate for farming.
There was also artisans. Artisans are people who can craft things by hand.
Don't forget about laborers. A laborer is someone who does physical work.
Shippers are people who ship things across seas. They were very important when it comes to triangular trading.
Traders were very important because they were the ones who kept their families alive by trading for other things.
The Dutch
On his journeys Henry Hudson claimed land which would be present day New York
Peter Minuit also bought present day New York City from the Manhattan Indians
They ruled the land for a while until New Netherlands was taken over by the English
New York/New Jersey Farmers
People had a hard time controlling faraway owned land so they did something about it.
They elected governors and representatives.
Quakers
They believed that all Christians should be free to worship in their own way.
Quakers were put in jail for their beliefs.
The people of Pennsylvania had more power then other colonies because they were allowed to approve or reject laws that the council suggests.
The Quakers were also friendly with the Native Americans.
