How this mode is used effectively
Why this mode is effective
This can be an writers main organizational strategy, allowing the reader and writer to understand the connection between reasons and results. ("Rhetorical Strategies")
Scenario: Keana fails this class.
Cause(s): She is lazy and does not work.
Effect(s): She gets punished by her mother.
There will be several different events given to each group. Students are required to write at least 3 causes and 3 effects pertaining to each event.
After you receive your event example, make sure to ask yourself, "Why did this event happen?" and, "What happened as a result?".
"Cause and effect" means that you start with a subject (an event, person, or object) and then show the causes (reasons) for it, and/or the effects (results) of it.This mode looks for connections between different elements and analyzes the reasons for those connections. The writer must search for any circumstances from the past that may have caused a single event, then seek occurrences that took place after a particular event and resulted from that event. (Jewell)
You can organize a cause/effect paragraph in several ways ("CAUSE AND EFFECT"):
discuss both the causes and effects of a problem or issue simultaneously or consecutively
state an effect first and then discuss its causes
state a cause first and then discuss its effects

An effective cause-and-effect paper discusses the chain of events related to a person, event, or object, showing what are the causes and what are the results. (Flachmann and Flachmann)
What to do
Choose an event or a phenomenon to analyze. Asking yourself "What happened and why did it happen?"
Sketch out the main points of your essay in the introduction. Readers need to understand the general topic of the essay.
List the causes and give their description.
Follow up with the effects, showing the connection between reasons and consequences. The readers must understandhow you have arrived at one from another.
Explain why your analysis is important and what its practical meaning is.
Make a conclusion.

Don’t try to cover all possible effects of the event, neither its short-term effects, nor those which relate to the distant future. Doing so will make your essay long and redundant, and will easily go off topic. Choose the most important ones.
Don’t try to describe something huge. If the topic that you’ve chosen is too broad, try to narrow it.
Don't confuse a connection in time or space with true cause and effect.
Effects of Automobile
"I worry about the private automobile. It is a dirty, noisy, wasteful, and lonely means of travel. It pollutes the air, ruins the safety and sociability of the street, and exercises upon the individual a discipline which takes away far more freedom than it gives him. It causes an enormous amount of land to be unnecessarily abstracted from nature and from plant life and to become devoid of any natural function. Causes of Child Obesity
"Many of today's kids are engaged in sedentary pursuits made possible by a level of technology unthinkable as recently as 25 to 30 years ago. Computer, video, and other virtual games, the ready availability of feature films and games on DVD, plus high-tech advancements in music-listening technology have come down into the range of affordability for parents and even for the kids themselves. These passive pursuits have produced a downside of reduced physical activity for the kids, often with the explicit or implicit consent of the parents. . . .
"Other fairly recent developments have also contributed to the alarming rise in child obesity rates. Fast food outlets offering consumables that are both low in price and low in nutritional content have exploded all over the American landscape since the 1960s, especially in suburban areas close to major highway interchanges. Kids on their lunch breaks or after school often congregate in these fast food outlets, consuming food and soft drinks that are high in sugar, carbohydrates, and fat. Many parents, themselves, frequently take their children to these fast food places, thus setting an example the kids can find justification to emulate."
