How Important is the Internet?
“An open Internet is essential to the American economy, and increasingly to our very way of life. By lowering the cost of launching a new idea, igniting new political movements, and bringing communities closer together, it has been one of the most significant democratizing influences the world has ever known.” - President Obama
THE PROBLEM
For a while the FCC had rules so that ISPs couldn't analyze or manipulate our data
January of 2014 the federal court overturned the FCCs rules
FCC now has implied that it may allow ISPs to charge content providers for a faster connection for consumers
Why a Free and Open Internet is Important
Phone companies can't do this
Helps economy through competition and innovation
It protects our freedom of speech
Comparison to Phone Companies
Laws in place so phone companies can't block or manipulate calls or texts
Only difference is that ISPs are able to manipulate data undetected
Hard to not notice a phone company doing this
Most people wouldn't notice when ISPs throttle
Economy
The competition of Americas free market economy should stop the ISPs
Vast majority of Americans only have three or fewer to choose from
Stimulate competition
Increase innovation and creation
Freedom of Speech
Spreading ideas in the 21st century is not very successful without the use of the internet
Freedom of speech should be protected online and offline
ISPs will be able to basically pick and choose who gets to use the internet
Internet could be a luxury, a privilege for a select few
We only get to view certain news stories that is controlled by corporations
Conclusion
Net neutrality increases the spread of ideas and promotes free speech
Create competition between ISPs and increase innovation and entrepreneurship
The internet is one of the greatest technological discoveries and it is important that we don’t let large corporations control it
