Clean nuclear energy Tori Kolster chemical reactions that have chemical equations are used all over
the world every day, with essentially
everything we do walking the dog starting a fire cooking the chemical reaction I
used for clean nuclear energy is... anything occuring when substances bond is considered a chemical reaction 235U + n ---> 134Xe + 100Sr + 2n the reactants in this equation are
Uranium and Nitrogen. There are 92 electrons, and 134 protons or uranium, and 1 proton of nitrogen. the products of the equation are Xenon,
Stronuim, and Nitrogen. There are 54 electrons and 80 protons witht the Xenon, 38 electrons and 62 protons with the Stronium, and 2 nitrogen protons. This equation is an example of
nuclear fission which was used in the
first atomic bomb and is still used and
effective today. Fission is when the nuclei of
an atom is broken apart and the
energy relased from there is what
is used in nuclear energy. My research question for this project
was to find out how nuclear energy works.
I found out many things about it and how it
relates to our world today. Nuclear energy accounts for
almost 20% of the worlds energy sources.
It does not emit any harmful chemicals into the air like some energy sources can, but it has other ways that it effects the environment. When nuclear energy is aquired, a lot of steam
is produced and needed causing the energy plants to have to take water from lakes and rivers. The water once used is put back into the source it was used from. The water is proven not to be radioactive, but it consists of heavy metals, salts, and has been heated to high temperatures causing harm to wild life. Besides the water, a lot of radioactive material has to be put away. They store it in areas in thick concrete and steel tanks so that none can escape. The areas where it's stored can stay radioactive for thousands of years after the energy is removed. A project is currently being worked on in Yucca Mountain in Nevada. They are building a radioactive storage plant inside the mountaiin that is planned to be open in 2012. Even if the storage area is ever removed, the mountain and large areas around it will be radioavtive for thousands of years.
