Hearing The visible outer ear funnels sound waves through thr auditory canal to the eardrum, a tight membrane that vibrates according to noise heard. The middle ear, the chamber between the eardrum and cochlea, transmits the eardrum's vibrations through the piston, consisting of the hammer anvil, and stirrup, to the cochlea, a coiled, bony, fluid-filled tube in the inner ear. The vibrations cause the oval window, the cochlea's membrane to vibrate, displacing the fluid that fills the cochlea. This motion causes ripples in the basilar membrane, bending the hair cells lining the cochlea. Hair cell movements trigger impulses at the base of nerve cells, whose fibers converge to form an auditory nerve, which sends neural messages to the brain causing transduction to occur. As an object enters the mouth, specialized taste buds on the tongue catch food chemicals in a pore. In each taste bud pore, taste receptors operate by activating specific responses to differing chemical substances; these responses send signals to nerve cells, located below the taste bud pores, which in turn send a neural signal to the brain in this manner of transduction. Sensing the World: How Our Senses Work Shrek Sight Light-enegy enters the eye through the cornea, which bends light to provide focus. It passes through the pupil; the iris adjusts light intake. The lens, behind the pupil, focuses incoming light rays in an image on the retina by the process of accommodation, the len's changing of shape to focus near or far objects on the retina. After being projected onto the retina the light-energy makes its way into the retina's outer layer of cells to the rods and cones. The rods and cones trigger chemical changes which spark neural signals that activate bipolar cells. Bipolar cells in turn activate ganglion cells which converge to form optic fibers. These optic fibers carry the image seen by the eye to the brain in this instance of transduction. When something is smelled molecules of that substance diffuse into the air. Those molecules reach a cluster of olfactory receptor cells at the top of each nasal cavity. These receptors alter the brain through their axon fibers, through which signals are relayed to the brain in this instance of transduction. Touch Specialized nerve endings, that respond to variations of pressure, warmth, cold, and pain, are found all throughout the epidermis embedded in skin cells. when interacting with an environment or things within an environment, these nerve endings respond by sending a unique combination of neural signals to the brain in this method of transduction. When the head rotates or tilts, fluid in the semicircular canals and vestibular sacs move about. This movement stimulates hairlike receptors, which sends messages to the brain in this instance of transduction, enabling a sense of body position and aids in maintaining balance. Shrek uses his sense of taste when partaking in home cooked swamp cuisine in the beginning scenes of the movie.

Shrek's sense of taste aids him by not allowing him enjoy meals, but also distinguish between sour or unpleasant foods which may be harmful to his ogre body. Shrek employs his sense of hearing when detecting the the dragon's roar from within side the castle ruins.

In this way, Shrek determines with his hearing that the roaring is from the dragon by the use of top-down processing and also determines its location by one of his oddly shaped ears perceiving sounds sooner and more intensely, ultimately aiding his ability to rescue Donkey. Shrek employs his sense of sight when pointing out constellation to Donkey.

In this manner, Shrek uses his visual sense to not only perceive stars in the sky, but also by the use of top-down processing, he makes connections between stars to form more complex abstract images. Shrek employs his sense of smell when he smells brimstone at the dragon's keep.

In this manner, Shrek's nose intakes the molecules of that compose brimstone and process the molecular combination into the smell of brimstone. Shrek uses touch to grasp the paintbrush when painting the sign in the beginning of the movie.

In this manner, Shrek's nerve endings relay information of the paintbrush to his brain, and in turn, Shrek has accurately paint a picture by applying pressure onto a surface with a paintbrush. Shrek uses his vestibular senses to balance on the bridge over molten lava.

In this manner, Shrek uses his semicircular canals and vestibular sacs to accurately determines the offset of his movements when shaking the bridge he and Donkey are on. Shrek uses his kinesthetic sense when fighting the knights in the wrestling ring and in doing so takes down all his competition.

In this manner, Shrek uses his sensors in various points of his body to accurately determine movements that inflict pain into the knight's pain receptors and all the while maintain a sense of balance while exerting such brute force. The thalamus receives the signal from the nerve cells of the taste sense system. This is due to the fact that it acts as a"switchboard" for information and stimuli the brain receives. The neural messages sent by transduction are received by the thalamus as a "holding area" for auditory information until passed to the auditory cortex where it is processed and perceived with top-down processing. The images sent to the brain and received by the thalamus which passes the information to the visual cortex of the brain. It then is processed and can also be sent to feature detectors. Signals sent from the smell sense system are processed and stored in the limbic system to be recalled and interpreted. Signals received from the touch sense system go to the thalamus to be processed with a majority of other senses. Signals from the vestibular sense system are sent to the cerebellum to be process seemingly unconsciously. Signals from the kinesthetic sense system are processed in the parietal cortex.
