Changes occur not only in womens physical structure but their physiological structure as well.

Facial features are developing in baby
Babies skin in see-through like
Size of an ear of corn
Historically, pregnancy was regarded as a state of confinement.

Women were advised to rest, avoid any strenuous exertion, and minimize stretching or bending for fear of harming the baby.

More recently research demonstrates many potential health benefits of aerobic & strength conditioning exercise in pregnancy & the postpartum period.
Purpose of Study
To determine the normal range for oxygen saturation at rest and on moderate exercise in healthy women from 24 weeks pregnant.

This study was developed to evaluate a simple, applicable exercise program for pregnant woman.

To differentiate physiological from pathological shortness of breath.
Few data on the normal range of oxygen saturation at rest and on exertion, and there is no standard exercise protocol
to deliver an appropriate
cardiovascular challenge in
pregnant women.
Aim of Study
Establish the normal range for SpO2 on moderate
exertion in healthy pregnant women, to determine
whether it is comparable with non-pregnant values.

To evaluate a simple, widely applicable exercise
protocol to deliver an appropriate moderate
cardiovascular challenge to women in the second
and third trimesters of pregnancy
100 healthy women in the second or third trimester of pregnancy were recruited from the ante-natal clinic.

If they had a given history of
significant cardiac or respiratory
disease or if they were unable to
give consent.
Following the study, fetal outcome was recorded
survival: 99
3 babies below weight
birth weight
A pulse oximeter was used to measure SpO2 with the probe on a finger.
Measurements of SpO2 and pulse rate were taken when the woman was standing at rest.
Women were exercised at their normal walking pace, (a pace where they still manage to talk.)
*walk on flat ground for 100m then immediately up 2 flights of 12 steps each.
Data Collected
Pulse rate & SpO2 were recorded continuously during exercise & the recovery period.
HR was recorded as an absolute value and as a percentage of the maximum predicted HR.
Calculated: (220-age)
Statistical Analysis
A paired t-test to test whether pulse rate & oxygen saturation changed significantly on exercise compared to the resting values.

Calculation: Mean + SD
Age: 15-47 years old
Mean gestation: 31 weeks; range of 24 -40 weeks
Mean Haemoglobin concentration: 1.7 + 1.2; ranging: 7.9-13.9 g/dL
Mean BMI: 27.1 + 2.9 kgm2
HR Response
Pulse rate during
exercise increased
by 46% from
Oxygen is carried in the blood attached haemoglobin
molecules. Oxygen saturation is a measure of how much oxygen the blood is carrying as a percentage of the maximum it could carry.

A led light sends of 2 wavelengths that obtain the ratio of oxygenated cells & non-oxygenated cells & returns a % known as SpO2

Collected Data
Absolute change
of 41.8 beats/minute
Peak heart rate expressed as a % of maximum predicted had a range of 58% to 84%. This chart displayed the number of women achieving each value.

The results showed that women achieved
between 65% & 75% of their maximum
predicted heart rate on exercise.

Only 1 woman failed to
reach 60%
Oxygen Saturation
Mean SpO2 ranged from 96-100%
Peak exercise SpO2 ranged from 95-100%
Mean fall in % SpO2 was 0.32

No women experienced less than 95%
in SpO2
Smokers SpO2 at peak exercise was 97.0
+ 0.7%
This study demonstrates that SpO2 in healthy women during the 2nd and 3rd trimester is normally greater than or equal to 95% normal range.

Predicted HR= 60-80% of max.
SpO2 only fell 0.3 & is not clinically significant

Does not address SpO2 response in women with cardiopulmonary disease
Pulse oximeters may cause artifact from excessive movement during motion.
Larger increase in HR on exertion was displayed in women with lower resting HR= fitter & higher vagal tone at rest
Protocol achieved the target of 60-80% max. predicted HR in most women. Only 2 women had greater than 80% but didn't exceed 85% so the protocol did not have a lot of intense exercise.

Women less than 60% of max. HR could extend their workout duration to increase their HR.

Simple and requires little equipment in which excesses the need and appropriate exercise regimen for pregnant women.
