By Shaniece Emmanuel Drunk Driving Part l
(The Problem) (Statistics) Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Part ll:
What I think should be done Doctors for Designated Drivers (DFDD) What can I do (Resources) Mad is a nonprofit organization. It is nation's largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. It was founded by a mother who daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mother Against Drunk Driving (MADD). It's main three focus is to annihilate drunk driving and help save lives. Doctors for designated drivers is another non-profit organization that is against drunk driving. Its main purpose is to help promote safety in using designed drivers, you may be wondering what is a designed driver. A designed driver is a person who agrees to refrain from alcohol and be responsible for driving others home. The others are free to drink or not as they choose. It is said that DFDD have help save thousands of lives. What I think should be done is there should be nationwide aware program reaching out to high school student teaching them the danger of drunk driving, but also reach out to elementary kids as well this would benefit them ahead of time. Also, I think they should make a new law inforcing that if anyone is caught drinking while driving, that person will be in serious problem such as being put into jail for 10-15 years, that would really teach the person a lesson on how really dangerous it is to be drunk while driving. What I can do is teach my family and friends about drunk driving. Also, volunteer and talk to kids younger than me about keeping safe and not to condone with alcohol while driving, including myself. Drunk driving as been a major problem for teens because each year there as been numerous of young drivers dying, injuries, and collision because of the usage of alcohol. Almost half of all drivers who were killed in crashes• and tested positive for drugs and had alcohol in their system. About one-third of all drivers arrested or convicted of driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence of alcohol are repeat offenders. 70% of all teenagers drink alcohol. 60% of all teen deaths in car accidents are alcohol-related. In 2010, 22% of drivers aged 15 to 20 involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes were drinking. Alcohol use remains extremely widespread among today’s teenagers. Nearly three quarters of students (72%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school, and more than a third (37%) have done so by eighth grade. http://www.madd.org/about-us/madd-goals.html http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/DrivingIssues/1093628753.html http://www.firsteagle.com/tdd.htm http://sadd.org/stats.htm http://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/teen_drivers/teendrivers_factsheet.html http://www.duifoundation.org/support/awareness/
