Using I.C.E when writing citations.
Transcript of Using I.C.E when writing citations.
What Is I.C.E ?
Let's look at another example..
-Whenever you cite something from a text, you're using it to SUPPORT a point you're making
-Answers are much more valid if they're backed up with evidence.
Considering all you've learned about your character from working on your body biographies, write a paragraph similar to the sample we saw, which asks you to sum up your character with one word and support it with a quote from the text.
Review Of I.C.E
I.C.E = Introduce, cite, explain
I.C.E takes this:
Aim: To be able to integrate quotations into our writing fluidly, using the I.C.E system
By Mr. Oliveri
-"In my research"
-"The text states"
-"In the book"
2. Ending a paragraph with a citation
3. Not developing or explaining your citation, just dropping it in.
Be Specific. In the future, your readers may not always know what text or book you read, it is your job as the writer to INFORM.
Remember, your paragraph should end with a general "wrap up" statement that gives the reader closure. Citations should be used to AID your point/idea in the paragraph, not help you wrap it up.
-Your citations should never be in a sentence by themselves; they don't make sense to the reader that way.
-Whenever you use a citation in your writing you should always have a lead in, and you should develop them for the reader
Muhammad Ali was the best boxer ever. "Ali is the greatest of all time."
The formula for perfectly written citations!
-Never just drop in a citation without introducing it; it's awkward
-Introduce your citations with simple lead in phrases..
- For example,
- In fact,
Muhammad Ali was the best boxer ever.
According to fellow boxer Mike Tyson,
"Ali is the greatest of all time."
- Proper internal citations
-Internal citations show that you've given credit to the author.
-Citations are in parenthesis, and the punctuation comes after
-Use after EVERY fact, statistic, example, quote or paraphrase.
-In the parenthesis, include the following information from the original source:
-Author’s last name & page number
Ex: (Smith 82).
Muhammad Ali was the best boxer ever. According to fellow boxer, Mike Tyson, "Ali is the greatest of all time"
-Follow up your citation by explaining it.
-Think: "Why is this important? What's the significance? What does this have to do with my main point?"
-Explain it for your reader!
Muhammad Ali was the best boxer ever. According to fellow boxer Mike Tyson, "Ali is the greatest of all time" (Tyson 1990).
Mike Tyson is another boxer that many consider to be one of the best ever, so when he says that Ali was the greatest of all time, his opinion holds a lot of weight.

Example of a low-level citation..
And makes it:
You've been working on body biographies for each character, you should know your character inside and out..
One word that could describe Darry is hardworking. Pony states
that, "Darry is always pulling muscles; he roofs houses and he's always trying to carry two bundles of roofing up the ladder" (Hinton 16). This reveals just how hard of a worker Darry is; it's not enough to work a hard job like roofing, he tries to carry double the amount of material up the ladder so he can do more work more quickly.
