Changing Particle Size Small particles have a bigger surface area than big particles.
When there is a bigger surface area there is more chance of particles colliding so with small particles the reaction rate is faster.
Increasing surface area increases the rate of a reaction. Collision Theory Particles only react when they collide.
However, not all collisions cause a reaction to occur. The particles must possess a certain minimum energy before they will react when they collide.
The minimum energy required for a reaction to occur is called the ACTIVATION ENERGY. Changing Concentration Increasing the concentration of a solution means that there are more particles per unit volume. As there are more particles in the same volume there are more collisions between particles.
Increasing the concentration of a solution increases the rate of reaction. Changing Temperature When the temperature is increased the particles gain energy so are moving faster and collide more often. They also collide with more energy. At a higher temperature there are many more particles with energy greater than the ACTIVATION ENERGY so there are far more successful collisions.
Increasing the temperature increases the rate of a reaction. Adding A Catalyst A catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction but is not used up itself.
Catalysts work by lowering the ACTIVATION ENERGY for a reaction so there are many more successful collisions.
