From a legal standpoint, it's a group of laws designed to protect the rights(and incomes) of creators.

From a moral standpoint, it's essentially the same protecting the rights of creators. Because copyright violations are so easy and
so frequent, law enforcement has no chance of monitoring and prosecuting every violator; thus, it functions more on the "honor system,"

Copyright is a form of intellectual property (as patents, trademarks and trade secrets are), applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete.[1] It is often shared, then percentage holders are commonly called rightsholders: legally, contractually and in associated "rights" business functions.[citation needed] Generally rightsholders have "the right to copy", but also the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights.

what is piracy ?

Piracy is simply defined as the creation of duplicate un-authenticated copies of some copyright protected item. The item can be a sound file, video file like movies, PC games, softwares or even hardware utilities. But the piracy of audio-video files is a much developed and penetrated crime as compared to another sort of piracies. Piracy is a special crime categorized under sections of copyright violations; it is in fact severely detrimental for growing music and video industries
Copyright law protects a wide range of creations. The most obvious examples of works that are protected by copyright are, of course, text, books, art, music and photos. However, there are many other manifestations that are eligible for copyright protection.
