Transcript of The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World

By: Gabriel Garcia Marquez (translated by Gregory Rabassa) The Handsomest Drowned
Man in the World Setting On a beach
In a small, isolated village
Few people living in the village
No modern technology
They rely on fishing for their supply of food. Summary This story begins when a few children see a bulge in the sea.
When it washes up on the beach they realize it is a drowned man,
covered in seaweed and other things from the sea. For the rest of the
afternoon they play with the corpse until another villager sees them and
tells the rest of the villagers. The men of the village then carry the body to
the nearest house, stating that he is very heavy.
("...he weighs almost as much as a horse.") He is also taller than other
men and barely fits in the house. The men of the village
travel to the neighboring villages to see where the body came from.
When no one claims him, they decide to give
him a proper funeral. Presentation Created By:

Setting Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution The falling action takes place as the body is falling towards the sea. The climax is the decision to have a funeral for the drowned man and as the funeral begins. The resolution takes place when the villagers return the body to the sea. As it falls they "realize the narrowness of their dreams" and decide to become better people. The rising action is the entire first part of the story as the villagers discover the body and search for where it came from. There are a large amount of characters in this story , however, they all have one thing in common. They are very superstitious. Their whole lives are based off of myths. So when this extremely handsome dead man arrives, they do not know what to do. They start to believe that he has special qualities and will help their village.
