We invaded Iwo Jima to get the two airfields that were located on the island. The Japenese were heavily fortified On Iwo Jima. According to John Bradley the men to raise the flag on Iwo Jima were mike strank, Harlon Block, Franklin Sously, Ira Hayes, Rene Gagon, and John Bradley. The mountain that they placed the flag on was Mt. Sarabachi. Before the flag was raised at the top of the montain there was a little American flag. The men were orderd to put up another flag, a bigger flag if you will, a bigger flag for everyone to see. As the war came to an end the president started the 7th war bond tour to debut securities to finance the purpose of the war effort. The inspiration for this bond tour was the 6 men raising the flag on Iwo Jima. The 6 men were brought back and they had big celebrations. One the flag raisers named Ira Hayes quoted "I was not a hero, the men who died back there are the men who should be called heros". Now all of the men who raised the flag are dead.
