Introduction to Existentialism
What is Existentialism?
Experience precedes essence...

We are all individuals:
Responsible for who we are
The sum of our choices and experiences

We are not...labels...stereotypes...

No such thing as "teenage" behaviour...or human nature...just individuals experiencing life in their own way
Why I bought into that...
We are free to be who we want

Age, ethnicity, gender, rich, poor...just labels that are ultimately meaningless!

You are the sum of your choices...your experiences...the decisions you have made
When I was a lad...
17 - discovered philosophy
18 - discovered existentialism
19 - studied Politics and Philosophy at university
27 - became a teacher (it was a long road here)
Choices and understanding consequences
Something that REALLY bugs me...

Choosing to be late
Choosing to get a face piercing
Choosing to treat a teacher with disrespect
Choosing to wear the uniform badly...the list goes on...

THEN NOT ACCEPTING THAT THOSE CHOICES HAVE CONSEQUENCES AND ACTING "SHOCKED" THAT THEY DO!!!
With choice...come responsibility
You are
responsible
for the choices you make...

If, you are the sum of your choices, and the choices you make determine who and what you are, then...

You
are responsible for your choices and the consequences of them...no-one else.

Responsibility is at the heart of being able to choose
Expectations:
1. Listen
2. Think
3. Act

You know the consequences...
After 4 years your choices are
informed!!!

You
know
the expectations but
choose
not to follow them...

There are no excuses...no one else is responsible...you chose...
you
need to deal with the consequences in a
positive
way...

Unintended consequences......
But I don't have a choice
Areas where you don't think you have a choice:
Time you have to get here
Where you live
Uniform
Doing subjects you don't like
Breathing
Sleeping
Eating
The positive side...and the real key message
We are responsible for the positive choices we make as well!

If you can choose...then you can choose to change

We are all powerful
agents of change
because we are not restricted by the labels placed on us by other people…

You ALWAYS have choices to make...
You
choose the time you leave the house

You
choose how to wear your uniform

You
choose to be disorganised...
The list goes on...
Unless we live in a determined reality...we have free will...which means
YOU CHOOSE!!!
You as an agent of change...
You are the sum of your choices
You are responsible for those choices

You can choose to change who you are...
You can make positive choices that will impact your life in ways you can't possibly imagine...

You can choose to change…you can be the agent of your own change…but it is dependent on actions not words…choose to change…be who YOU want to be…not who society thinks you are…
As our Saviour taught us, so we pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
