The main objective of this report is to help the student determine how to develop and arrange his data in a way that would best communicate his ideas to the reader.

Informal Definition
consists of one or more synonymous expressions substituted for the unfamiliar term used.

DESCRIPTION OF MECHANISM
DEFINITION
Definition is a process which use analysis and explication to make the meaning of a term clear. It is classified as: INFORMAL, FORMAL and EXTENDED.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES OF TECHNICAL WRITING
Formal or Sentenced Definition
as its name suggest, is in the form of sentence with these three elements: Species (the term defined), Genus (class or kind to which the term belongs), and the Differentia (the distinguishing characteristics that make the term different from other terms of the same class).

Example:

Coquina
is a
sedimentary rock

formed by accumulation of abundant shell fossils and fragments .

Example

A man who is known to be a player is a womanizer.

Embellish or Adorn - decorate
Counterfeit - fake
Circumvent - avoid
Amenable - agreeable
CLASSIFICATION
Classification involves grouping things together (on the basis of similarities) and dividing from them (according to differences).

Description of Mechanism is an assembly parts having one part fixed with respect to a frame of reference and designed to produce an effect. It is designed to convey to the reader a technical understanding of the function appearance and operation of a particular object.

What does it look like?
How does it work?
What are the principal parts?



Typically the parts of mechanism description answer the following questions in order :
INTERPRETATION
Interpretation is the art of establishing a meaningful pattern of relationships among a group of facts.

Three Key Questions that Arise in Any Interpretation
What is to be found out?
How was evidence obtained?
How will the interpretation be organized?

DESCRIPTION OF A PROCESS
A process is a series of action, and fundamentally the description of a process is the description of action.

Amplified or extended definition
ensures the reader's understanding of a thing or idea. It uses phrases, clauses or sentences in order to make ideas or concepts clear.
Example:

Tomatoes, the "best dietary source of lycopene,” it contains a carotenoid that gives tomatoes their red hue. Tomatoes help in stopping endometrial cancer cell growth, according to a study in “Nutrition and Cancer.” It also fights lung, prostate, and stomach cancers. Endometrial cancer kills nearly 8,000 people yearly.
Patients can benefit more from taking cooked tomatoes (e.g. pasta sauce), for the process of heating it increases the amount of lycopene one’s body can absorb.

Who performs this process?
Why is this process performed?
What are chief steps in this process?
From what point of view is this process going to be considered in this discussion?
Why is this process being described?
