Shiva, Anna, Sam, Patrick, and Taneja The Darfur Genocide Beginning of a Genocide The genocide occurred on February of 2003.

The victims were the people of Darfur and other non-Sudanese people.

There was an election angering the people to revolt against the government. The Killings The government then retaliated by killing
any groups who supported the rebels.

This resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent people.

Luckily people escaped by warning the outside world of the horrors of Darfur. The Innocent The victims of the genocide were non-Arab or African tribal groups of Darfur. Survivor UN Reactions April 30th, 2006

Lost around 200 members of his family.
Surrounding villages were burned to the ground and 132 people were killed in one village.
His cousin was killed by Janjaweed militia.
His cousin was killed in front of his family and his home was burned down. The main tribal groups that were targeted were the Massaleit and the Zaghawa. The genocide in Darfur has claimed 400,000 lives and displaced over 2,500,000 people.

President Omar al-Bashir was accused for directing rape and pillage against these civilians in Darfur. On September 9, 2004 the United States Secretary of State, Colin Powell declared the events occurring in Darfur "genocide". The UN tried to prevent those involved in the genocide.
Worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century.
1st time the US has declared genocide while a genocide was still happening. Many people are upset and want someone to go and take control of this situation. People find this event horrific and as an reaction they are putting more pressure on the UN. People are unsure how to help but they are willing to help and stop this genocide.
