The Wiyot Indians
Transcript of The Wiyot Indians
The Wiyot Indians mainly fished.
Shirts were not required among the Wiyot people.
Today, Wiyot Indians are just like us.
Actually pronounced WEE-yot!
Where do they live?
The Wiyot Indians lived in Northern California along the shores of the Humboldt Bay.
They would house under rectangular, red, wooden plank houses.
Men would catch fish from their canoes.
Women would gather things like acorns,
berries, and roots.
Women would wear long grass skirts that were usually decorated with shells and beads.
Men would wear buckskin breechcloths with leggings to protect their bare legs.
They speak their native language, Wiyot, which is an Algic language.
One Wiyot word is "He'ba'lo" (hay-bah-loh).Their last native linguist passed in 1962.
Crafts and Art
The tribe's artists thrived in their basketry and woodcarving arts.
One popular game is the stick game, a gambling event where children guessed the location of marked sticks.
Descendants still live there with Hupa,
Tolowa, Mattole, and Yurok Indians
on four rancherias.
They would also wear jewelry made out of shells.
For footwear, they wore moccasins and sandals.
They are trying to revive their language.
One of the more famous ceremonies was the "world renewal ceremony," a dance lasting seven to ten day. It is held annually at Tuluwat.
One particular myth was one about Gudatrigakwitl, "The Ancient One Above." It explains how life came to be.
The Wiyot Tragedy
In 1860, while the men were off elsewhere and the women and children were proceeding with a religious ceremony, a man named Hank Larrabee led his followers into the village and slaughtered the people there.
