ACT
American College Test
What is it for?
Your ACT composite score, together with your high school grades, indicates how prepared you are for college. In addition, the scores from the various sections of the ACT will help your college place you in the right classes, matching your skills with course requirements.
College Entrance Exam must be taken for any 4 year University (either the ACT or SAT)
Can be used as a placement test for a 2 year college (must score at least a 18 in English, 21 in Reading, & 22 in Math for the ACT or above 500 on the SAT in each section)
Can also help with $cholarship$!
What is the test like?
Total of about 4 hours with a few breaks.
1. English = 45 min.
2. Math = 60 min.
3. Reading = 35 min.
4. Science = 35 min.
5. Writing = 30 min.
How is the test scored?
You get a score for each section
Each one is out of 36
Then your "composite" score is the average of all your section scores
24 English, 24 Math, 24 Composite
Average Range: 22-26
So how do you take this test?
So how do you take this test?
Well you have to first week of March 2015
This is part of a law in North Carolina for all juniors and it is completely FREE!
Normally the test costs $54.50 each time you take it and before you apply to college you
should
take the test around TWO times to get your best score.
Strategize!!
Two Important Things to Note
1. You can use a fee waiver to take the SAT or ACT as a junior or senior BUT you only get two in your lifetime and once you sign up it is used.
2. Think strategically about when to take these tests BEFORE senior year and you can register online with College Central anytime.
So do I have to study?
FREE PREP!
You can prep afterschool ALL of February
There will be general sessions and then help sessions with teachers to help you understand what you can improve on.
For every session you attend you will be entered into a raffle to win free registration fees, gas cards, and food gift cards.
The more you study the first time the better you will do and you will be less likely to have to take it again when it costs money.
What Will I Need on Test Day?
A few pencils bigger than this
Calculator!
(IMPORTANT: You
cannot
use a TI-89 or TI-90
Some type of photo ID
Tips:
You
can
guess on the ACT because there is NO penalty if you get a question wrong. (On the SAT they take off 1/4 of a point for every wrong question).
Pace yourself and answer every question you are sure you know first and then go back and answer the others.
Remember all questions count the same so answer the easy ones first!
Practice Problems
When x = 3 and y = 5, by how much does the value of 3x2 – 2y exceed the value of 2x2 – 3y ?
A) 4
B) 14
C) 16
D) 20
E) 50
14 is the correct answer. When you use x = 3 and y = 5 in the given expressions, 3x2 – 2y = 3(3)2 – 2(5) = 27 – 10 = 17 and 2x2 – 3y = 2(3)2 – 3(5) = 18 – 15 = 3. Then subtract 3 from 17 to get 14.
Some live in airless
seams of burning rock;
miles beneath Earth's surface and around the hydrothermal vents of deep-sea volcanoes. Others, salt-encrusted, "sleep" in ancient
caverns, waking
after centuries to feed and
to be bred.
1. A) No Change
B) seams, of burning rock
C) seams of burning rock
D) seams, of burning rock,
2. Which of the following alternatives to the underlined portion would NOT be acceptable?
A) caverns. Then they wake
B) caverns and then wake
