Exercise On lesson one
Mr.Ahmed Elbasha

Exercise 1
An element lies in group (3B) and period (4). Mention its kind and in which block it lies.
answer
- Its kind : transition element.
- It lies in : d-block.
2n² Role
- The number of electrons which saturate the first four energy levels (K, L, M and N) can
be calculated from the relation (2n² ),
where (n) is the number of energy level therefore :
(1) K level is saturated with 2 electrons.
(2) L level is saturated with 8 electrons.
(3) M level is saturated with 18 electrons.
(4) N level is saturated with 32 electrons.

How to locate the position of an element in the modern periodic table :

The element period number
= number of energy levels occupied by electrons in its atom
The element group number

= number of electrons in the outermost energy level in its atom.

Locate
Locate the position of each of the following elements in the modern
periodic table :
the atomic number = number of protons (in the nucleus) = number of electrons.

1H
The electronic configuration of hydrogen (1H) :
• The number of energy levels occupied with electrons = 1
• The element is located in period (1).
• The outermost energy level contains 1 electron.
• The element is located in group (IA).
Locate
Locate the position of each of the following elements in the modern
periodic table :
10Ne

2. The electronic configuration of neon (10Ne) :
• The number of energy levels occupied with electrons = 2
•The element is located in period (2).
• The outermost energy level contains 8 electrons.
• The element is located in group (0).
Thanks
20Ca
. The electronic configuration of calcium (20Ca) :
• The number of energy levels occupied with electrons = 4
• The element is located in period (4).
• The outermost energy level contains 2 electrons.
• The element is located in group (2A).
:. Calcium element (20Ca) is located
in period (4) and group (2A) in the modern periodic table.
