Configure Your Computer to be Power/Energy Efficient
While working on the computer, keep devices off when not required to reduce energy
Buy ENERGY STAR or EPEAT approved computers/monitors when it comes time to buy a new computer.
Keep a plant on your desk. It absorbs computer air pollutants and radiation. Weak safety environmental laws.
Developed countries make profit by sending E-waste to developing countries.
Developing countries make useful materials out of E-waste. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND SUSTAINABILITY E-WASTE Negative Effects of Computer Use on the Environment Using Computers to Reduce Resource Use Repair or upgrade instead of recycling
Donate old items and buy reused
Refurbishing and leasing Some retailers recycle old electronics.
Companies make new goods out of the old E-waste.
In India, artificial ornaments are being made out of E-waste.
Peel region is also running an electronic recycling. Singapore recycling plant Many hazardous chemicals and heavy metals in a computer are disastrous to the environment
Lead, mercury, and cadmium are some toxic metals
These metals contaminate, poison the soil and air
Depending on the amount of exposure, the effects vary E-waste dumped in developing
countries The collected devices are sorted according to the type of device it is
Devices are dismantled and further sorted according to its components
*Hazardous substances are sent to specialized facilities to be safely processed/recycled. Hard drives are destroyed by being crushed or shredded.
Sorted components are shredded, and processed to be reused E-Waste Recycling Process Local E-Waste Recycling Facilities (Mississauga) Shift Recycling

Canada What is E-Waste? E-waste or WEEE is electronic waste of electronic devices that is towards the end of its life/no longer useful to the user
20-25 million tons of e-waste is added to the global solid waste pile each year
With this growing issue, the government imposed the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 to enforce appropriate e-waste recycling Bibliography: -laws. Toxic scarp are sent to countries like china, india and africa which burn and exract precious metals
Polluting local air causing respiratory problems and lead poisoning
Harmful effects to humans and the environment *Fact* (Additional Info. # 1) One metric ton of circuit boards can contain between 80 and 1,500 g of gold and between 160 and 210 kg of copper. *Fact* (Additional Info. # 2) An average of 16 new types of cell phones come on the market each month, increasing the amount of
E-Waste every year. Each year, we dump cell phones containing worth over $60 million in gold and silver. *Fact* (Additional Info. # 3) Works Cited
