Spina Bifida traces back 12,000 years, but it wasn't until 1955 that the first breakthrough was made with Casey Holter. Casey was born with Spina Bifida so his faher met up with his doctor to try and save him. Together they created the Splitz-Holter shunt which saved millions even though Casey did not survive.
General Overview Of Spina Bifida
Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect. The neural tube is a structure in the womb that will eventually develop into the brain and spinal cord. Usually the neural tube will develop and close before 28 days. Neural tubes in babies with Spina Bifida either did not develop fully or close fully, making a defects in the spinal cord.
