These levers can help to either increase force or generate more speed depending on the position of the fulcrum.

There are 3 types (classes) of lever. They are categorized according to where the fulcrum, load and applied force are positioned.

1st class, 2nd class, 3rd class

A lever is used when you want to apply more force. Most levers have 3 clearly identified parts:

- Fulcrum
- Load
- Force

Levers in the body
The pivot point around which the movement happens in body levers this is usually the joint.
The Fulcrum
The Load
The weight that needs to be moved.
The Force
The place where the force is applied. In the body this is the effort produced by the muscles contracting.
Second Class Levers
These allow more force to be produced because the effort, or force arm, is longer than the resistance arm.
Third Class Levers
These generate speed rather than force
The pivot is at your toe joints and your foot acts as a lever arm. Your calf muscles provide the effort when they contract. The load is your body weight.
The fulcrum is at the elbow and the forearm acts as the lever arm. The biceps provide the effort (force) and flexes against the weight of the forearm and any weight that is being held.
Most levers used in Sport are 3rd class levers. These levers are better at generating speed than force because of the position of the fulcrum. Lengthening a third class lever increases the speed that can be achieved - using a bat, racquet etc. adds length to the forearm which allows the ball to be hit with more force.
Using Levers in Basketball?
Levers are simple machines made up of a pivot (fulcrum), effort, and resistance (load) arm.
Levers help apply force.
Longer levers result in greater speed. Good for throwing & striking.
Shorter levers result in greater strength. Good for pulling, pushing and lifting.

The most common lever found in the human body is the
3rd class

Levers in Basketball:
3rd Class Levers - Bending your arms to shoot or throw/pass the ball to team mate

2nd Class Levers - Standing on tip toes for a jump shot or reaching for ball

1st Class Levers - Nodding head to signal to team mate or umpire
