WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CULTURAL DIVERSITY?
WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL?
BUT FIRSTLY, LET'S DEFINE "CULTURE"
It could be said that culture is the shared ideas and activities through which a group of people understands and constructs its world.
However, we can't exactly define culture. It does not entail a concrete definition!
an attempt to confirm a sense of social superiority
a way of doing things associated with a particular place or people
changes according to socio-historical circumstances
a strategy or program for survival (Banks, 1988)
What is Cultural Diversity?
It is the cultural diversity and cultural differences that exists in the world, society, or an institution; the inclusion of diverse people in a group or organisation.
What does this video tell us about Cultural Diversity in an educational setting
Fair learning environment for everyone!
Migration for economic purpose * Highly skilled migrants from Asia and Europe
Educational opportunities in Australia and improved lifestyles
Rich cultural mix of cuisines and traditions
Multicultural Australia? * History of policies e.g. White Australia Policy * Recent events e.g. Cronulla Riots * Issues of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment
40% of Australians are either migrants or have one parents who migrated to this country, and at least in NSW and Victoria, around 1 in 4 students in public schools come from language backgrounds other English. This emphasises the diversity of cultures in Australian schools

Anti-Racism Policy (2005)
To eliminate all forms of racism in school environment and in school curriculum.
Although racism and bullying still exists today, it is the responsibility of each generation to continue to work against it.
Multicultural Education Policy (2012)
Previously known as the Cultural Diversity and Community Relations Policy (2005)
To acknowledge and value all backgrounds and cultures of students.
Promoting community harmony within the school context.
Promoting positive community relations

- The British colonised Australia in the late 18th century
- They brought they own religious beliefs and "white" culture

* Constant vigilance as educators and community members to ensure equitable practices.
* Teachers must recognise the Anti-Racism Policy and the Multicultural Education Policy in their classrooms.
* Promoting understanding and tolerance of opposing views.
* Create a supportive, respectful, inclusive, flexible and multicultural environment where individual opinions are valued.
* select materials and develop lessons that counteract stereotypes and incorporate contributions/ POV.
* meet the needs of students through inclusion and other models of effective practice.

How would you deal with racism in your classroom?
Barriers to effective multiculturalism in education
* a set of principles that point out the natural and inseparable connection between culture and cognition (Sheets, 2005).
* it maintains that culturally inclusive teachers: (a) observes children's cultural behavioural patterns to identify individual and group cultural competencies and skills
(b) use this knowledge to guide their teaching decisions.
* It recognises the powerful, active role students play in their learning.
* culturally competent teachers know how to change their instructions and understand how to create optimal learning conditions to enable more children to learn what they intend to teach.
However, despite these theories and their expectations, there is an overstated need for diversity acceptance in education though we are fundamentally under-prepared to incorporate diversity in instruction.
Quality language teachers are scarce and few parents are knowledgeable enough to be effective instructors.

Low participation rates in schools for certain immigrant communities.

* Early education teachers play the most essential role
* They lay the fundamental foundations in educating about cultural diversity
* A 2007 and early 2008 study titled
"Representations of Cultural Diversity in school and Community settings"
involved case studies of 4 public schools in the greater Sydney region
We have learnt that...
* cultural diversity should be addressed and included in the school curriculum
* all students are equal regardless of their cultural background
* as future teachers, we should aim to be culturally inclusive teachers and create an optimal learning environment
* we should combat any bias and be willing to accept others as we are role models for our students
Cultural diversity, especially in its policy frame of “multiculturalism”, carries 3 key implications:
heritage culture preservation and survival
inter-cultural engagement and synergies
and a capacity to operate as global citizens.
