Transcript of Roles of a Female

Background on Late 19th Century
Topic Sentence
In order to trace the continuum of female characters in The Awakening we analyzed how Madame Ratignolle and Madamosielle Reiz facilitate to restrain Edna Pontellier's decisions. We also identified the way they function and what it teaches us about women's roles in the late nineteenth-century New Orleans.
Thesis
While Madame Ratignolle portrays the ideal mother-woman and Madame Reiz demonstrates the rarely seen free spirit, Edna remains at a cross-road in deciding what she really wants in her life.
