The Mayan's Empire was set in the middle of some Tropical Lowlands in which today is where Guatemala is located. Overall they lived within the Yucatan peninsulas perimeter. They were located in parts of Belize as well. Also bordered on the western parts of Honduras and El Salvador they felt secure from Mesoamerican invasions.
Where were these Mayans located?
What were the Mayans known for?
The Mayans had an impressive architectural design and had some cool looking buildings. They were almost like the egyptians pyramids but smaller and had a square top. They were also very good at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyphics, calender making and mathematics. They were said to have raised fields and canals running in between. They may have grown corn, cotton, sunflower seeds, and some other plants.
Major Mayan Cities
Three major cities was Tikal, Dos Pilas, and Copan. Tikal is located in the rainforests of Guatemala. Tikal has been known as the capital of the Maya. The city Dos Pilas is located near the Salinas river. This city was known for its strength and size. It was powerful enough t take down one of their major competitors. Copan is located in the western part of Honduras. This city was also very special because of their size and many rulers. They traded with many other cities and places.
How long did this civilization survive?
This civilization started settling around 1800 B.C. The earliest Mayans grew beans, maiz(corn), and squash. Throughout this time they began to gain control of some of the surrounding low and highlands. They started to grow in knowledge in which was shown by their very articulate pyramids and stone monuments. Around 250 A.D. the Mayans had about 40 cities and overall they had about 2,000,000 people. They had definitely grown immensely. Around 900 A.D. the Mayan civilization had started to diminish. No one really knows why but one by one each city started to become abandoned. Some scholars think that they worked the ground to much for all of the people and it couldn't support anymore. Essentially they lasted from 1800 B.C. through 900 A.D.

The Mayan Civilization
The city of Tikal is located in the rainforests of Guatemala and has a population of 60,000 to 70,000 people. The city of Dos Pilas is located near the Salinas river and has a population of 50,000. The city of Copan is located in the western part of Honduras, and has a population of 20,000.
The Cities Size and Location
The Mayans would every so often have a sacrificial offering. Two men would hold down the hands and feet while a priest would cut open the chest and tear out a heart as the offering. It is known that the Maya believed that the cosmos had three major planes, the Earth, the underworld beneath and the heavens above. They also praise a corn god.
The Mayans excelled in pottery making, and also had some exquisite paintings. They had discovered a blue and has been held onto over the centuries. It is known as the Mayan Blue.
Around 900 A.D. the Mayan civilizations started to diminish. Over time cities would be abandoned and no one would be found. One by one the cities fell away. Philosophers believe that they had worked the ground to hard or their government had began to fall apart.
