Parts of an Argumentative Essay
Paragraph 1: The Introduction
In the introduction of your essay, it is important to lay out a few key things.
First, you need a 'hook,' something to catch the reader's attention and make them want to read your essay. This could be a shocking statistic, an emotional story, or a personal testimony.
Next, you need to introduce your claim. Explain to the reader what it is you believe and why he or she should care about it.
Finally, introduce your thesis. Your thesis is a clear statement of what your paper will be about: the point you are trying to make and how you will prove that point.
Paragraphs 2-4: Evidence
In paragraphs 2-4, you need to provide evidence to support your claim. This evidence needs to come from outside sources that are trustworthy and respected, such as scholarly journals, reputable newspapers, or professionals in the field. If the sources you use are not considered trustworthy, your argument will fall flat because you do not have quality evidence to back it up.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion
The conclusion is your final paragraph. In the conclusion, you restate your thesis statement and briefly discuss how your evidence supported your claim. Then, it is critical that you remind your readers why this should matter to them. When they ask "So what?", tell them why your claim is significant.
What you believe to be true
Your explanation of your claim and how you will prove it to be true or solve the problem
Resources and information you will use to prove your claim
How you wrap up your essay and assure that the reader is convinced of your point
Claim: Eating too much junk food leads to childhood obesity.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2010, one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Eating too much junk food is a primary cause for childhood obesity. Sugary snacks and greasy fast food have sent children on the fast track to serious health issues. Children must cut back on their junk food intake to avoid obesity before it is too late.
Undoubtedly, in your research, you will find sources that do not agree with your claim or try to prove it false. It is important to mention these in your argument because it shows you are unbiased. After you mention them, you should state why they are invalid in a respectful manner.
Sample Body Paragraph
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity is caused by children consuming too many calories with too little physical activity. The calories in junk food are much higher than in healthy food, and junk food is often cheaper and more readily available than healthy food. If healthy food were more easily accessible for children, the rate of childhood obesity would decrease.
Therefore, as statistics and studies have repeatedly proven, junk food is a leading cause of childhood obesity. This health crisis must be stopped before it leads to more serious issues. The children of America must learn to protect themselves from the dangers of excess junk food before they have to deal with the severe consequences.
