Holden Caulfield is a poor student who is being kicked out of a boarding school called Pency Acadamy in Pennsylvania, near New York. When he leaves the acadamy, he heads towards New York City and takes part of the near Christmas nightlife of getting drunk and visiting family.

The departure from Holden former teacher, Mr. Antolini's, apartment for some advice on places to stay. Then the teacher goes on with a speech about becoming a man while drinking cocktails. Holden gets upset when he wakes up that night and finds Antolini patting his head in an uncomfortable way. Holden leaves the apartment wondering if what Antolini did was right.
About the Author
J. D. Salinger was born in January 1st, 1919 in New York. He was a poor student and was sent to military school in Pennsylvania. During the '40's, Salinger was drafted into the army and was writing his first book during his military career. In 1941, he published a book called "The Catcher in the Rye." He wrote other books in the '50's and '60's. He died on January 27th, 2010.
Holden decides that he'll move out west and life as a deaf/blind man. He tells his sister, Phoebe, and she gets very mad at him. Holden leads her to Central Park Zoo and she goes and rides the carousel. It fills Holden with lots of joy seeing his sister ride in the rain. In the end, he does not speak of the present day, except about being sick and in a mental hospital. He also says he will start school in September
Holden catches the train to the city, and checks in at a hotel, since his parents expect him home at Christmas. He spends the evening with tourist women who live in Seattle. Holden calls a prostitute to go into his hotel room and... When Holden sees her walk in, he decides not to do it. After she leaves, Holden calls a past date named Sally. They planned to attend a play. When they meet up, Holden asked sally to run away. She declines and storms off.
