Cosmetics is a product applied to the body, especially the face, to improve its appearance.
synonyms: makeup, beauty products, beauty aids
It can include everything from lotions, powders, creams, oils, perfumes, gels, hair bleaches and dyes, mud packs, nail polishes, deodorants, and a lot more.

Makeup is just a division of cosmetics that makes the face look beautiful. This includes eye shadows, eyeliners, lipsticks, mascaras, blushers, foundations, pressed powders, moisturizers, etc.

1. I agree that if applied correctly cosmetics like makeup can make someone appear prettier.

2. But my knowledge on the side effects on using them influences my choice of not using them.

JUST THINK ABOUT IT?
In 1938, to protect consumers, Congress gave the FDA authority to regulate color additives. Due in part to questions about carcinogenicity, the agency has banned a number of dyes and has specified where certain ones may be used — for example, only food-grade dyes can be used in products applied around the eyes, Romanowski says. One exception to the ban: coal-tar dyes. These dyes can be used in darker hair-coloring products, provided they carry a warning about possible skin sensitivity and against dyeing eyelashes or eyebrows (which may cause blindness). "Coal-tar dye ingredients [listed on labels as, for example, 4-methoxy-m-phenylenediamine are infrequently used.
Examples
For instance,
PETA announced
earlier this year that
Avon, Mary Kay, Estée Lauder
have
returned to animal testing
after two decades in which they prided themselves of refraining from such practices and have been consequently downgraded. The loss of the 'leaping bunny' symbol which reassured concerned customers now also extends to labels the companies own like
MAC Cosmetics or Essie. Aveeno, Shiseido, Vidal Sassoon, ROC, Neutrogena, Clinique, Max Factor, Rimmel, Maybelline
are just some of the brands that should be avoided by those willing to stop this practice.
