16 FACTS ABOUT THE ANCIENT ROMANS
FACT #5:
The ancient Romans used gross
animal parts for taking care of their
hair, for example: earthworm ashes,
hippo skin, bat blood, hedgehog
ashes, and even leeks boiled in wine!
FACT #6:
Two words:
Public
baths.
FACT#7:
Only boys were allowed to
go to school!
FACT #9:
The best kind of slave to be in ancient
Rome was a Greek one since
the Romans really admired them and
treated them well.
Fact #10:
In chariot races, the
teams would be named
colors
(
red
,
blue
,
green
,
and
white
).

FACT #11:
The Romans had a huge road
system that
eventually
covered
53,000
miles!
FACT #13:
The Roman gods were a lot like Greek gods.
The Roman king
god was Jupiter
who was also god
of the sky and
lightning. Sounds a
lot like Greek king
god Zeus, don't
you think?
FACT #12:
If you wanted to join
the army in ancient
Rome, you
had to sign on
for 25 years!
FACT #14:
The Roman
emperor's
birthday
was a national
holiday!
(he must of got a lot of presents!)

FACT #15
When a baby was born, he/she
was placed at their father's feet
and if he picked
them up, he
accepted the
responsibility
of the child. If he
didn't, the baby was
abandoned and, most
likely, died. :(
FACT #2:
Streets were so crowded in ancient
Rome that no wheeled traffic was
allowed during the day.
FACT #8:
Many Roman women would die
in childbirth before they
turned
30!
FACT #16
When someone died, their oldest son would
put a coin in the
deceased mouth
so in the afterlife
they can pay the
ferryman
who takes them
through the
River of Styx and
to Hades, god of the
Underworld.

FACT #4:
Ancient Romans would eat
lying down
on couches!
FACT #3:
There were three classes:
aristocrats, knights and commoners.
FACT #1:
The poor in Rome used to live in cramped
high rise apartments and the buildings were
built higher and higher for more
people to fit. It became so
unsafe that a law passed
limiting them to 70 feet
tall!
