Transcript of The PhD Dilemma

Discuss with your supervisor about the expecations they have from you
Sometimes, homesick can be tough.
Supervision is a hierarchical relationship
No! it is NOT!
(should not be)
keep a lively social life
The PhD dilemma...
"Between a rock and a hard place"
Do something else besides your thesis

Having unhelping thoughts never helps,
having helping thoughts usually helps...
The PhD is not only a degree, but a process about...
Rules of the game
... and the expectations you have from your supervisor.
...positive feedback is not as usual as you may expect.
is the center of your work!
Keep an eye on:
If you feel that something is

work on it ...NOW!
Look for chances to discuss your research beyond your group.
Build up your network
try to identify what are

PhD is about challenges
how to get

Prepare your meetings
Know what you want
Ask questions
Seek feedback from many sources
When you feel that something is going wrong, try to find every week something that you did quite well.
(and don't forget the D.O.W.S)

Imagine a circle that contains all of human knowledge...
By the time you finish elementary school, you know a little:
By the time you finish high school, you know a bit more:
With a bachelor's degree, you gain a specialty:
A master's degree deepens that specialty:
Reading research papers takes you to the edge of human knowledge:
Once you're at the boundary, you focus:
Until one day, the boundary gives way:
You push at the boundary for a few years:
And, that dent you've made is called a Ph.D.:
Of course, the world looks different to you now:
So, don't forget the bigger picture:
