The attempt to establish the conclusion of an argument by using that conclusion as a premise. Fallacy in this poster: Obama is the first black president.
President decides changes,
So Obama is citizens' hope. Let's analyze it! Since Obama is the first black president, many people believes he could make changes in the country. However, the poster above is a fallacy, because people believe the conclusion "Obama IS hope" before they believe the premise "Obama can make changes". In this advertisement , there is no open mind simply because conclusion is set despite whatever the premise may be. This is the Fallacy of Composition: arguing that what is true of the parts of something must be true of the whole thing. Fallacy in the Campaign: She (the prostitute) may look clean
BUT she spreads syphilis or gonorrhea
Therefore, all prostitutes have syphilis or gonorrhea. Let's Analyze it! This is an advertisement from WWII when syphilis and gonorrhea were endemic. Both diseases could be transferred through sexual contacts. Therefore, in order to prevent the diseases from spreading, advertisement like this was used to label prostitutes as the source of the diseases. However, this mislead readers, since not all women have STI and it could also be transferred through men. This could also be... Hasty Generalization: when a conclusion is made about a whole group based on an inadequate sample of the group. Hasty Generalization in this Advertisement: Prostitutes carry syphilis and gonorrhea,
because some prostitutes were accounted for the diseases. Let's Analyze it! Although prostitutes are sexually active and may contract the diseases, not all prostitutes necessarily have the diseases. This advertisement is stereotyping prostitutes as promiscuous and disease carriers. There's more!
What other fallacy is in this advertisement? Slippery Slope: arguing, without good reasons, that taking a particular step will inevitably lead to a further, undesirable step (or steps). Fallacy shown in this advertisement: Prostitutes have syphilis and gonorrhea,
The disease will transfer through sexual contact and,
Soldiers will not be capable of beating Axis if contracted with the disease Let's Analyze it! This advertisement is a slippery slope because it stated as if prostitutes HAVE syphilis and gonorrhea, sexual contact with prostitutes WILL become infected with the disease, and infected soldiers CANNOT defeat Axis.
However, these seemingly inevitable events are fallacies without good reasoning. Why should you feel sorry? Because this is an Appeal to Emotion fallacy: the use of emotions as premises in an argument. The fallacy in this advertisement: You can save children dying from basic illness,
so they can grow up and take care of their family, all you have to do is join their campaign Let's Analyze it! This advertisement is using strong emotions to persuade readers to save the children through joining their campaign. It gave readers a sense that if they do not join, children will die. BUT will joining their campaign save all those children? Probably not. This is an example of Fallacy in this advertisement Let's Analyze it! Faulty Analogy An analogy draws a comparison between two things.
An argument from analogy compares two things, and then suggests they must be alike in some further, less-obvious, way. The fallacy of faulty analogy: when the items being compared are not sufficiently similar in relevant ways. Pregnant horses were put into a tight space in order to have their urine collected for menopause drugs,
So, we should imagine our pregnant selves locked in a stall waiting for people to collect our urine. This is an effective analogy for PETA to show their message to people because pregnant horses are treated inhumanely, but it does not change the fact that this is a weak arrangement. Humans and horses are not the same thing so treating both circumstances in the same manner is irrelevant. Although previous examples only show one fallacy, advertisements usually contain more than one! Such as... Fallacies are present everywhere in modern society. SO... It is crucial for us to detect these fallacies before giving something credibility. Since what is shown may not be the full story. In conclusion:
These advertisements are full of fallacies.
Therefore, you should analyze every advertisement you see. Since they all contain fallacies! The conclusion above is a fallacy too!
