Evolutionary – incremental innovation.
Revolutionary – creates a thing that didn’t exist before, but in a continuation of an existing market.

The entire world spice industry is disrupted by one man. Frederick Tudor (1783-1864). He invented the Ice House. This let you store large quantities of ice in high heat and lose very little.Frederick Tutor travels to the Caribbean. He thinks people will pay for ice. He fails twice. On the third time, 1/3 of the ice makes it. It pays for all three trips.Ice becomes the new global industry. India becomes the biggest customer.
Not one of the companies that was in the spice trade makes it into the ice trade. Not even the ships make the jump. Total, massive, global disruption that takes place over 20 years. You’d think that Frederick Tutor would understand disruption. And yet, his entire industry is disrupted within 10 years by the artificial ice makers. Again, not one of the companies in the natural ice industry makes it over to the artificial ice industry.
Then, the ice box democratizes ice. Now, instead of taking your food to the ice house, the ice is delivered to you. Before this, only kings could have ice cream in the summer.Nobody from artificial ice makes it over to the refrigeration industry. And that’s where we are today. So, is that where it stops? What disrupts the refrigerator?
