Transcript of THE COLOSSEUM

My project is on the Colosseum
It is located in Rome, the capital
city
of Italy.
The Colosseum's construction began in 72 AD under the
rule of
emperor
Vespasian
and was
finished by
his son
Titus, 10
years later.
After construction, the Colosseum could hold up to 55,000 spectators. The Colosseum was built for entertaining the people of Rome, and all of the events that went on inside of it were free for the public to enjoy.
Lots of events went on in the Colosseum,
but the most popular were the gladiator
fights!
There were many different types of Roman Gladiators. Just to name a few, there were the Saggitarius, who fought with a bow, the Rudiarius, who used a wooden sword called a Rudis, and the Hoplomachi, who weilded a gladius and shield.

Some other popular events were wrestling, chariot races, wild animal fights and executions. Sometimes there would even be re-enactments of naval battles.
Fun facts about the Colosseum
The Colosseum was originally called the Flavian Ampitheatre.
It is the biggest ampitheatre made by the Romans covering 6 acres of land.
100,000 cubic meters of travertine stone was used to make the Colosseum's outer wall.
The actual arena inside the Colosseum was 76 by 44 meters and 48 meters high.
The Colosseum was built in an ovular shape with 80 arches on each of its 3 stories. The floor of the arena was made of wooden planks, but it was covered in sand for shows so the floor wouldn't have bloodstains on it.
