How is an animal cell like a Starship?
An animal cell is composed of many organelles that work together to help it survive. Like a cell, a starship also has many members; each element of a starship specializes in a specific area, just like each organelle has a specialized function
The Nucleus
The nucleus is the control center of the cell; it commands other parts of the cell and tells them what to do. Jean Luc Picard is the captain of the Enterprise, and he commands the crew and controls all major functions of the ship
Endomembrane System
Ribosomes
The officers of the enterprise relay the captain's messages to the crew, much like the ribosomes relay the information inside the nucleus to the rest of the cell
Nucleolus
Starfleet academy is where new crew members (ribosomes) are trained. The nucleolus is where ribosomes are built.

Endoplasmic
Reticulum
The endoplasmic reticulum is like a transport system for the cell. It moves mostly proteins to their programmed locations. The corridors of the ship are like an ER, because they are the pathways that people (proteins) take to their ordered location.
Golgi Apparatus
The golgi apparatus is the place where items get shipped out of the cell. Proteins are sent from the ER to the Golgi, which are then sent out of the cell. The transporter system is like the Golgi. Crew members, when they get sent on away missions, must walk through the corridors to the transport room. That is where they get energized off the ship.

Vacuole
The vacuole is the storage compartment of the cell. It stores water and other molecules. A plant cell has a large central vacuole. The Cargo Bay is like the vacuole. The crew puts things in the cargo bays like chemicals and large objects in storage.
Mitochondria
The mitochondria powers the cell. It breaks down food to produce cellular energy, called ATP. Cellular respiration occurs here. The mitochondria is like the warp engine. The engine powers the ship by a matter/anti-matter reaction. The engine allows the ship to travel at faster than light speeds. The cell can't travel nearly that fast!

Lysosomes
Lysosomes are small organelles that help to digest molecules and break down organelles. They help the cell clean up unwanted structures. The trash system is like a lysosome. It gets rid of unwanted materials.

Centrioles
The centrioles help to divide the cell during reproduction. They make sure each new cell gets an equal share of DNA. The centrioles are like the Holodeck on the enterprise. It can reproduce any person or object you can program into it

Cytoplasm
The cytoplasm is the area outside the nucleus. It includes the liquid part of the cell, and the organelles. In prokaryotes, all cellular contents are found in the cytoplasm. Eukaryotes have a nucleus, which separates the DNA from the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm is like the air and life support systems of the enterprise. The environment keeps the crew functioning and is the space that they move through.
Cell Membrane
The cell membrane is the thin outer layer of the cell. It protects the cell from the outside environment; it controls what enters and exits the cell. The shields are like the cell membrane. The shields on the enterprise can control who boards the ship, and are used to defend the Enterprise.
