Begin with a general statement that will immediately hook your reader's attention.
The medical profession plays a critical role in in the care and wellbeing of those around us.
Then gradually add sentences that get more and more specific in relation to your topic
The medical profession plays a critical role in in the care and wellbeing of those around us. Although there are many occupational roles within this profession that are essential to the effective treatment of patients, nurses in particular can perhaps be described as the heart and soul of the clinic, and few demonstrate this quality to a higher degree than Clara Barton.
Finally, end with a specific thesis statement
Your Thesis should identify 3 Things:
Topic
Claim
Evidence
Think of your Thesis as a roadmap that reveals all of the parts of your essay to come.

Remember ICE
Clara Barton is known for her many war time services and for the foundation of the American branch of the Red Cross.
One of Barton's most admirable war time feats took place during the Civil War, where she bravely traversed the front lines to aid Federal Troops. For example....
Through her brave self sacrifice and altruistic vision, Clara Barton earned her rightful place in the medical history books.
I: Introduce
C: Cite Specific Examples
E: Explain how these examples contribute to your thesis
Transitions
Always be sure to connect your thoughts from paragraph to paragraph so your readers can follow your thought process.
While Barton's impressive accomplishments assured her place in history
, however,
it is her strong personal and professional values that draw me to her as a personal mentor.
Restate your thesis in a new way and tie up all of your thoughts so we are reminded of the big picture your essay is trying to create. Think of the conclusion as funneling your reader in the opposite direction as your introduction.
Conclusion
Answer the "So What" question
Other Possibilities:
Make a prediction
Make a call to action
Make a recommendation for continued research
Clara Barton was truly one of the greats. Throughout the journey of achieving her incredible accomplishments, she maintained wholesome values that made her more than just an extraordinary figure from history. It is the upholding of these such values that lead many to describe nurses like Barton as "the heart and soul of the clinic," and just think about where clinics would be without that heart and soul. Others should look to Barton, as I do, as a role model in the medical profession, for our world is ever in need of compassionate, self-sacrificing practitioners who can be a strong yet friendly presence for all those in need.
