The need

There are now over one million 16 to 25 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) in the UK. That’s nearly 1 in 5 of all young people. From listening to the young people on our programmes, we know the reasons why they are in this situation are multiple. Some are carers; others have a disability or learning difficulty. Some are homeless; or have had challenging upbringings with no role models. Others have had a better start in life, but are struggling to find work in a crowded job market at the tail end of a recession. Every young person we come across is different, but all are willing to at least try to turn things around
What we do

Through a range of personal development programmes run across the country, every one of our disadvantaged young people receives mentoring and support from a world class athlete.
How we do it

Olympians, Paralympians and top athletes have experienced the highs and lows of world-class competition. They know what it’s like to overcome adversity and still have the will to succeed. We support these athletes, known as our GiveBack Team, and help them make the most of their skills and experience to improve young people’s lives.
The results

Last year, 80% of young people we supported made a positive change in their lives and 75% were ready for sport, training, education, volunteering and/or employment. By 2016, we’ll reach 200,000 young people.

Our athletes

Every one of our disadvantaged young people receives mentoring and support from a world class athlete. We support these athletes, known as our GiveBack Team, as they retire from competing, and help them make the most of their skills and experience to improve young people’s lives.

Why support athletes?

Our research tells us that many athletes need help to transition into post-competitive career lives and most have traits that make them ideal role models and mentors for young people.
There is no other organisation that provides a long term support mechanism for these athletes to develop from their sport and utilise their exceptional experience and expertise to benefit others in the community.

Works alongside CentrePoint and comic relief DKHT supports homeless young people

Athlete mentors work alongside the Centrepoint Charity with the homeless young people on a week long intensive programme

Gives the young people vital mentoring, key life skills including physical well being, staying motivated, working within a budget

Those with a sporting interest are invited to a sport development scheme, training and playing alongside the elite athletes enhancing skills and attitudes

Sport for Change

Young people undertake sporting and school or community-based projects, where they develop communication and team work skills whilst increasing their social capital in their local community . This phase of the programme also provides young people with the opportunity to explore potential careers across a range of industries with work experience, practice interviews and intensive mentoring from elite athletes.

Sports England is a government agency which provides funding and facilities, measures participation and identifies priority groups.
Their main target is to help people and communities across the country to create a sporting habit for life
What does a sporting habit for life mean?
Why is this important for society?
Why would the government think this is important?
Therefore, their overall ambition is to increase the number of people who play sport regularly and reduce the number of young people who stop playing sport when they leave school.

SE goal is to create a sporting habit for life, therefore they need to know why people drop out of sport. This means they need to measure participation and find groups to target.

Holding competitions which link into the school games structure
