What caused tension between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R?
Transcript of What caused tension between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R?
The Cold War was a war between the communist countries lead by the Soviet Union and the Democratic countries led by the United States. The Soviet Union was trying to spread communism while the U.S. was trying to stop them. The leader of the Soviet Union was Joseph Stalin while the U.S. had many leaders during the period of the Cold War. The reason it was called the Cold war was because they never actually fought each other head to head. 1
The cold war cost billions of dollars on each side. The cold war lasted from 1945 to 1991. The cold war killed nearly 5 million people in all the wars that originated from the communist vs democracy fight. The Cold war ended in 1991 after the U.S. outspent the Soviet union and made them bankrupt. 1
One of the main causes of tension between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R was the extreme distrust of one another. The Soviet Union thought that the U.S. wanted to takeover the world. Th U.S. also thought that the Soviet Union wanted to take over the world. Every dispute there was they saw it as a battle between right and wrong. 1
Another cause of tension was the the Soviet Union wanted capitalism destroyed. This set off tension because this was the main economic system of the U.S. The Soviet Union accused the U.S. of influencing other nations and interfering with other nations. The United states and the Soviet union both thought that their political systems were superior and that the other countries political system was inferior. 1
Another cause of tension was that the Soviet Union was trying to spread communism. The U.S. was against communism and they took leadership of containment policy. The Containment policy was the U.S. approach to trying to prevent communism spreading. They were trying to make other countries not even think about turning communist by providing them whatever they needed. This policy was created by Harry Truman. 2

Another thing that caused tension was the threat of nuclear warfare. There were thousands of nuclear missiles ready to fire on both sides. The threat of nuclear war hung over like a giant shadow on both sides. If the war would have come to this most of the world would have been destroyed. 3
In conclusion many things caused tension between the US and the Soviet Union. The extreme mistrust of one another. The threat of Nuclear warfare. The soviets trying to spread communism. I dont believe anyone really won this war because it has caused lasting tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union now present day Russia.
