Transcript of History of Atoms

History of Atoms By: Patrick Gibbons Democritus John Dalton Dalton's Atomic Theory 1. All matter is composed of extremely small particles which are called atoms 2. Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass, and other properties.Atoms of different elements are different in size, mass, and other properties. 3. Atoms cannot be subdivided, created,or destroyed. 4. Atoms of different elements combine in simple whole number ratios to form chemical compounds 5. In chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated, or rearranged. Joseph John Thomson Cathode-Ray Experiment Discovered Electrons Ernest Rutherford Discovery of a densely packed bundle of matter with a positive charge called the nucleus Aristotle Gold Foil Experiment Nature's basic particle was an atom. Matter is composed of atoms which move through empty space. Atoms are indivisible and solid. Different kinds of atoms have different sizes, shapes. Size, shape, and measurement of atoms determine the properties of matter. Empty Space Cannot Exist. Matter was made up of earth, air, water, and fire.
