Unit Conversion
Example 1
Airam is driving at 70 miles per hour, what is her approximate speed in kilometers per hour?

1 pound x
16 ounces 80 ounces
You will learn:
How to convert one unit of measurement to another.
Terms & Names:
Rate: a comparison of two quantities that have different units of measure
Speed: distance divided by time
Unit: a particular amount of length, time, etc., that is used as a standard for counting or measuring
Per: indicates rate
Convert: to express a given measurement in terms of a different unit of measurement
Ratio: comparison of two numbers of quantities, may be written as a fraction
How to set up this problem
1 mile 70 miles
1.6 km = x hours

Check for Understanding
By Azzel Menzie, Airam Lopez, Nathalie Mejia
When you're given a measurement in one unit, and you are asked to change it to a different unit, you can make a conversion by setting up a proportion
12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
1760 yards = 1 mile
Fahrenheit: 9/5 celsius + 32
Celsius: 5/9 fahrenheit - 32

10 millimeter=1 centimeter
100 centimeters=1 meter
100 meters=1 kilometers
60 seconds = 1 minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
7 days = 1 week
rate of
as fraction

driving at
what you're trying
to figure out
1 mile 70 miles
1.6 km = x hours
1 x X = 1.6 x 70
1x = 112
x = 112 kilometers
for x
A bag of Skittles weighs 80 ounces. How heavy is the bag in pounds?
1 pound = 16 ounces
x = 5 pounds
( 1 mile is approximately equal to 1.6 kilometers )
cross multiply
16x = 1 x 80
16x = 80
x = 5 lbs
Basic Units
Common Misconception
Many times people forget to line up the same units with each other
1 foot x
12 inches 50 inches
Nat bought a desk that measures 50 inches long, how much is this in feet?
1 foot 50 inches
12 inches x
A little more challenging. . .
Azzel took a 3 hour nap, how much is this in seconds?
1 hour = 60
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour 3 hours
60 minutes x

Convert hours to minutes
x = 60x3
x = 180 minutes
1 minute 180 minutes
60 seconds x
Then convert minutes to second
x = 180x60
x= 10,800
Azzel slept for 10,800 seconds
