Transcript of Theme
the central idea or truth a story reveals about life
what the story teaches readers.
it is a debatable opinion.
ANY theme can be considered valid IF you can support it with text evidence!
HOWEVER, the theme with the most text evidence is always correct.
To help you find the theme, try to identify the TOPIC of the message first
What is the TOPIC?
How would you hashtag this story?
Connection to the Real World
People who are greedy often end up losing the things that are the most important in life.
Sometimes it is best to be happy with what you have.
Theme is NOT:
a word, it is a sentence.
You don’t have to agree with the theme to identify it.
The longer the text = the more themes possible
Sometimes it's STATED
The author tells what the theme is. For example, fables usually give the theme at the end.
Sometimes it's IMPLIED
In most stories the theme is implied. You have to use the elements of the story to find the theme. The key is the protagonist. Did the protagonist change? How? Why or why not?
Topics are like hashtags.
The Hunger Games #power
Remember the Titans #unity
Romeo and Juliet #love
Harry Potter #friendship #sacrifice
The Walking Dead #survival
Think about how the TOPIC relates to the real world.
