The way to overcome the works of the flesh is to live by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
"such things" (v. 23)
matters mentioned elsewhere
examples, relevant to church
all good fruit is from the Spirit
The Fruit Listed
feeling of happiness and pleasure
acts of mercy toward others
Fruit is a metaphor to show that these traits and deeds are the result of God's Spirit working in us.
It also
indicates
that these
are the natural
result in a person in whom the Spirit lives
and works.
Not by Human Effort
Ephesians 1:18-20
same power that raised Christ from the dead
Ephesians 3:20
Ephesians 3:16
enables us to resist the works of the flesh
enables us to have the fruit of the Spirit
incomparably great power for Christians
Do you believe there is remarkable power available to you?
God can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine in our lives.
He does it according to his power who is at work in us.
He provides the power through his Spirit
The Holy Spirit is a better and effective replacement for the law
It is imperative that we genuinely believe this
Our Role
crucify the flesh
keep in step with the Spirit
we have to
have crucified
our flesh with its passions and desires (v. 24)
We lead our wayward, willful self out to the place of the skull and execute it.
It is also true that God crucifies our old self
Here, the repudiation of the self is something we did when we became followers of Jesus
That decision will need to be renewed regularly
(cf. "daily" in Luke 9:23)
Christians deal with their flesh more radically than merely subjecting it to law--
we
crucify
it.
Since we have
died with Christ and
been raised with him
to have new life
in the Spirit,

it is fitting that
we keep in step
with the Spirit.

In order for the Spirit to bear fruit in us,
we also have to
keep in step
with the Spirit
(v. 25).
The word "keep in step" refers to following the path of attitudes and behaviors indicated
by the Spirit
as he leads us.
"keep in step" is
a present
tense,
indicating
an ongoing choice.
but we must choose to comply.
God Almighty
is at work
in us,
(cf. 6:7-8)
We crucify the flesh
and follow the Spirit.
The fruit that the Spirit bears in us is a drastic contrast to the works of the flesh.
