*It took 30 seconds from the moment they saw the iceberg until The Titanic hit the iceberg.
The Tragedy

How The Titanic Sank
Lifeboats
*Titanic hit the iceberg at 11:40pm on April 14th.
*The iceberg cut into the metal and water started pouring into the ship.
*There were 20 lifeboats on the Titanic. There should have been 48.
The builders of the ship thought the Titanic would look crowded if they put all 48 lifeboats on the ship.
Why did they not have all 48 lifeboats?
*What do you think the people on the Titanic were thinking when they FIRST found out the Titanic was sinking?

The Sinking
*The Titanic was known as the UNSINKABLE SHIP!
*People did not believe the ship was sinking AT FIRST.

*What do you think an iceberg is?

*Talk with the person next to you.

*As the ship started sinking, people began to realize what was happening.
*After people realized what was happening, what do you think they were feeling as the ship sank?

WOW

*About 700 people survived.

TELEGRAPH
Carpathia
*The Carpathia was the ship that got to the scene first. It was early morning when Carpathia found the lifeboats.
LIFEBOAT MATH
*Each set of partners will get a card.
*How do you think they communicated to other people that the Titanic was in danger?

YOUR JOB!
1. To find out how many people were on your lifeboat
.
2. How many MORE people could have been saved on your lifeboat.

Newspapers
How many of you have family members or friends that you see read newspapers?

*Everyone was waiting for the Titanic to finish its first journey across the ocean.

*When the Titanic hit the iceberg, the two men started sending messages to other ships for help.
news
*Instead of the Titanic arriving in New York, people started getting news that the Titanic had sunk.
-Remember: They communicated with what?????

65 people could have fit in each lifeboat.

-People thought it was safer to be on the Titanic than get in the lifeboats.
*There were two men that worked in the communication room.
*In 1912, one way people communicated with each other was with a telegraph.
*People used Morse Code. Each letter in the alphabet had a code.
Morse Code
*Both men stayed in the communication room as long as possible while the Titanic sank.
HELP!
*They made contact with many ships in the area. And many ships were rushing to the Titanic.
*All the people in the lifeboats (the survivors) were put on the ship Carpathia.
BUT
*None of the ships they contacted were close enough to rescue them before it sank.
*Many newspapers had the news of the Titanic on their front pages.

*Some things in the newspapers were true and some weren't.
Captain's Orders
*After the Titanic hit the iceberg, Captain Smith told the crew to get the lifeboats ready.
*He told the crew that women and children would get on the boats first.
